Sustainability in Coastal Plain Urban Centers of the Gulf Coast Region

Description:

Given the tragic events in Houston, prior events in New Orleans, and projections of increased extremes in weather, there is a critical need to focus on issues of sustainability in coastal communities of the Gulf Coast Region. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine proposes to organize a 90-minute symposium at the upcoming NCSE National Conference, focusing on the economic, social, and environmental relationship, including displacement of people and social economic implications along with environmental impacts. The session will also address needs for data and long-term monitoring and potential strategies for promoting sustainable infrastructure in coastal urban areas. Case examples of these issues will be presented by experts with experience in analyzing coastal urban regions involving science, technology, and sustainability issues.

Speakers:

Emi Kameyama, The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Dr. Vaughan C Turekian, Ph.D., The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Dr. Suzette Kimball, Ph.D., U.S. Geological Survey
